8,000 fans crowded into two city blocks of downtown Los Angeles’ Broadway Street, between 4th and 6th streets, to party for free with DJ Steve Aoki during a special sold-out concert dubbed LAoki. In an interesting twist, Aoki only made the free tickets available to people who signed up for further information about LA Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Volunteer Corps. The Volunteer Corps’ website describes the program: One of Los Angeles’ greatest resources is its motivated, creative, and compassionate people who work and live here. The Mayor’s Volunteer Corps is dedicated to bringing Angelenos together and focusing their skills and energy on service opportunities that will result in long-term change. The Mayor’s Volunteer Corps is divided into six interest areas that give its Members the ability to choose the issues they want to help solve. As an artist, Aoki has been using his music to ignite social change. This free concert, which took place on Saturday night, May 16th, was also part of the city’s “Bringing Back Broadway” campaign. The ticketing website stated the concert was being held to, “remind Angelenos that we need to stay engaged to build a Los Angeles that lives up to its name as the creative, artistic and entertainment capital of the world.” #aokijump #634. The Billboard award-winning and Grammy-nominated artist is one of the most recognized names in EDM and has collaborated with various artists from will.i.am to LMFAO and Lil Jon. Of course, some attendees didn’t have to bother acquiring tickets. The free concert was also available for residents of Broadway and immediate surrounding areas to enjoy (or, perhaps, not enjoy depending on music tastes) from their own homes. In addition to Aoki, concert goers got additional performances from Travis Barker, Sherry St. Germain, DJ Carnage and others. This is #LAOKI.
