Turned Upside Down, It’s a Forest features the highly ambitious project of Takahiro Iwasaki Turned Upside Down, It’s a Forest features the highly ambitious project of one of Japan’s leading young artists and a rising star on both the Japanese and international art scenes. This monograph, created for and in conjunction with Japanese artist Takahiro Iwasaki’s installation at the 2017 Venice Biennale, offers an opportunity to sense and experience the Japanese view of the natural world — one centered on harmony and a symbiosis with nature. Iwasaki uses everyday and familiar objects to create intricately refined works of art characterized by their delicate handiwork and figurative representation. Craft-like techniques in pieces such as his Reflection Model (Ship of Theseus) communicate Japan’s unique relationship with the natural world. The work is edited by Meruro Washida who is the curator of the Japan Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale and a curator at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa.
